Burned my throat smoking weed. Any tips?

So I burned my throat smoking weed. I've been doing it on and off for a year now. It was out a bong. It wasn't a real big hit. It just scorched the **** out of my throat. Now I've got a sore throat. Never happend before. I think it was because the weed was really harsh, too. Any tips how I can avoid this happening again. I would like to get high without having this happen. Tis why I don't drink. Having a hangover isn't worth it. Have a sore throat isn't worth getting high.
